English : Impact of the radio program, "Ardel-Mahrousa", as a source of knowledge related to wheat and maize crops: a comparative study of farmers knowledge in some villages of Sohag and Monofia governorates

Abstract The main objectives of the study were to determine difference between farmers' knowledge who listen to the radio program, Ardel-Mahrousa, in relation with maize and wheat crops in Sohag and Monofia governorates, to identify incentives of their listening to the program, to determine different variables that affect their listening to the program, and to identify farmers suggestions concerning benefiting more from the program. The study sample encompassed 200 farmers, from eight villages located in Sohag and Monofia governorates who cultivate maize and wheat crops and listen regularly to the program. The study data were collected during the period; March - April 2000 A pre-tested questionnaire and personal interview were used in collecting the study data Percentage, Z-test, and Simple Correlation Coefficient were used in analyzing the data. The main results of the study were as follows; (1) There was a significant difference between maize farmers' knowledge as a result of their listening to the program; (2) There was no significant difference between wheat farmers' knowledge in the two governorates as a consequence of their listening to the program, (3) There was a negative significant relationship between occupation (work) and knowledge score of Monofia maize farmers' as a result of their listening to the program, on the other hand, there was no significant relationship with the rest of the studied variables; (4) There was a positive relationship between each of educational condition, number of listening to the program /month, discussion with other information sources family size, and Sohag maize farmers' knowledge score obtained from listening to the program. (5) There was no significant relationship between each of the studied independent variables and Monofia wheat farmers' knowledge score resulted from their listening to the program; (6) There was a significant positive relationship between size of agricultural land ownership and Sohag wheat farmers' knowledge score as a result of their listening to the program, There was no significant relationship with the rest of' the studied dependent variables; (7) It was found that the most important incentives for the respondents to listen to the program were desire to have new extension instructions, combination of entertainment and benefit, desire to correct wrong existing knowledge related to maize and wheat crops; The study revealed some suggestions in order to bring about more farmers benefit of the program including: increase dissemination period of the program to reach thirty minutes each time, disseminating the program twice a week during S-9 P.M.; and disseminating knowledge related to the two crops in a time that fits their timing of cultivation.
