Span of supervison in the agricultural extension work: a study on the relationship between the span of direct extension supervision and some variables denoted to agric. extension supervisor's abilities at Assuit and Sohag governorates in Egypt

Abstract

Span of supervision is considerd one of the important variables in organization and organizational behavior. It has its effects on the effeciency and effectiveness of the extension organization and supervising ext. Personnel. No study in Egypt was conducted on this critical topic. So this study amied to determine the relationship between the existing span of direct supervision in agric_ extension and some variables denoted to the supervisors abilities such as: Qualification, previous service in agric. work, previous service in supervisory job, period of training in supervision, opnion about benefit from supervision training, period of training on agric. technologies, total scores of job knowledge, and total scores of job implemention. The research amied also to determine the contribution of all independent variables in explaning the variance of supervision span as the independent. the last objective was to investigate the principle factors which constitute the span of supervision. Assuit and Sohag were selected as the research area to interview a random sample of 150 respondends. A questionnaire with interview was constructed to convey scales of the studied variables. Person con. Coef. , Multipule corr. & regression, and factor analysis were the statistical tools used to analyze the data. The maid results were: there is a significant corr. coef. between the span of supervision and all variables except the two variables dealing with training in supervision. previous service in ext. work which were unique variables so it explaining about 23 % from span of supervision variance. The research extracted two principle factors formed the span of ext. supervision such "orientation to previous of experience in agric. ext. profession" , and efficiency of cognative and performance abilities.
