Evaluating the daily food intake by the rural women in different life stage

Abstract |
This study was carried out to know the daily food intake by the rural girls and women starting from age 11 and above and also women during pregnancy, lactation and elderly stage, aiming to evaluate their food intake as to cover nutritional needs and also to know some nutrition habits to rural family.
The data about family nutrition habits were collected by personal interview using pre-tested questionnaire from a random sample amounting to 226 rural family from two governorates Kafr El Sheikh and Beni Swaif. To recognize the daily food intake, data were collected from all girls (11 years old and above) and women within the 226 family they were amounted to 700 respondent. A twenty four flour dietary recall was used to evaluate the daily food intake, and comparing the dietary intake of the rural women with the recommended Dietary allowances (EDA). Frequencies, percentage and food analysis table; were used to present and analyze data statistically.
The main findings were:
1- Regarding to rural family nutrition habits the results revealed that:-Most of rural family consume daily bread, sugar, tea, meatless cooked vegetables, fresh vegetables, milk, oil, beans and its productions, rice, fruit, plant and animals fats respectively.
Potatoes, chicken, fish, lentil and meat were consumed once a week, while macaroni were consumed monthly.
2- Evaluating the daily food intake, the study revealed that;
- In the category of 11-14 years old, the girls got their nutritional needs from calories and protein. More than 90% of them did not get their needs from calcium and phosphor, about half of the girls did not get their nutritional needs from Iron and vitamin C.
In the category of 15-50 years old, more than two thirds of the girls and women did not get their nutritional needs from calcium and phosphor. About one third of them did not get their needs from calories, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C.
- In the category of 51 years old and above 59.7% and 30.5% of these women respectively did not get their nutritional needs from calories and protein. More than 70% did not get their needs from calcium and phosphor. While more than one third did not get their needs from vitamin C, iron and vitamin A respectively.
- More than 90% of pregnant women did not get their nutritional needs from iron and calcium. While 50% of them did not get their needs from calories, phosphor and vitamin C.
- Most of lactating women did not get their nutritional needs from phosphor, vitamin A and calcium while about two thirds of them get their needs from vitamin C and calories.
