Abstract |
Two field trials were carried out at Zarzoura Experimental Research Station in El-Beheira governorate through 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 seasons to study the response of faba bean (cv.716),onion (cv.Giza20), and wheat (cv.sakha 93) to intercropping with fodder beet (beta vulgaris L.) under three levels of N.P.K.; (L1) 90,30,48,(L2) 105,40,60 and (L3) 120,50,72 kg /fed. The treatments were assigned in split plot design with three replications. The results indicated that :
Intercropping significantly reduced plant height, bulb diameter, bulb weight. plant and total yield/fed. Of onion. faba been plant height, number of pods/plant, weight of pods/plant, seed yield/plant, weight of 100 seeds and seed yield/fed. Were reduced. Also, plant height, number of tillers/plant, spike length, number of spikes/plant, number of grains/ spike, weight of spike, weight of grains/spike, weight of 1000 grains and yield/fed. (ardab) of wheat were reduced. Fodder beet top fresh length, root diameter, root weight/plant and roots yield/fed. Were significantly reduced by intercropping. Compared to fodder beet sole crop .
Increasing fertilizer level up to the medium level of N.P.K.(105, 40 and 60 kg/fed.) significantly increased growth, yield and yield components of onion and increased yield, yield components of wheat up to the highest levels (120, 50, 72).On the other hand, faba bean plant growth, yield and yield components were not affected by increasing fertilizer level, that the lowest level was enough ( 90, 30, 48) Fodder beet growth, yield and yield component significantly increased by increasing N.P.K. fertilizer level (120, 50, 72),respectively.
Interaction effect of cropping systems X N.P.K. levels fodder beet were significant on root diameter, root weight/plant and roots yields/fed..
Application of the highest level of N.P.K. with onion gave the fodder beet roots/fed. (47.75 ton/fed.), whereas the lowest value was recorded with the lowest level of N.P.K. and wheat (30.03 ton/fed.).
Competitive relationships :
Land equivalent ratio ( L.E.R), area time equivalent ratio (ATER), relative crowding coefficient (K) recorded the highest values when onion was intercropped with fodder beet fertilized with the highest level of N.P.K., while the lowest values were recorded with wheat fertilized by the lowest level.
Fodder beet was the dominant crop, while onion, faba been and wheat were the dominated crops.
The increase in net return were 2097.00, 745.60 and 876.08 LE/ fed. for onion, faba been and wheat intercropped with fodder beet, respectively at rate of 120 N, 50 P and 72 K kg/fed fertilizerrs level.
