English : A preliminary point out on selenium status in some crop residues
Arabic : إلقاء الضوء على حالة عنصر السلينيوم فى بعض المخلفات المحصولية
Abstract Ten different field crop residues of maize stalk(M), rice straw(R), wheat (W), cotton (C), banana (B), sugar cane leaves (SCL), sugar cane stalk (SCS), tomato (T), faba bean (FB) and peanut (PN) were collected from El-Kalubia governorate. Three portions from each residue were subjected to three different treatments. The first portion of each residue was not treated, the second was incubated for 3 months, and the third was incinerated. Ash weight, nitrogen content, C/N ratio as well as phosphorus and selenium content of the different field crop residues were measured. Values of nitrogen content of the crop residues ranged from 1.32% (SCS) to 2.30% (PN) with an average of 1.86%. The C/N ratio ranged from 22.56 (PN) to 42.43 (SCS) with an average of 28.66. The phosphorus contents were very low and ranged from 540 (FB) to 2387 (B) mg/kg residue with an average of 920 mg/kg. Selenium contents were 73, 63, 64, 94, 84, 84, 68, 88, 67 and 82 ug/kg dry weight for M, R, W, C, B, SCL, SCS, T, FB and PN respectively. The decomposition of residues through incubation resulted in a reduction in the selenium content. The selenium losses by incubation ranged from 0 (W) to 28.05% (PN) with an average of 11.91%. The maximum loss in selenium content occurred with incineration of the residue. The selenium content ranged from 4 (PN) to 44 ug/kg (SCL) with an average of 19 ug/kg. The loss ranged from 47.62% (SCL) to 95.12% (PN) with an average of 75.74%. The lost selenium after incineration was higher than after incubation, where the general average values were 75.74% and 11.91% upon incineration and incubation
