Abstract |
The experiment was conducted to evaluate the possible usefullness of supplying sodium bicarbonate, potassium chloride and vit.c ( Ascorbic Acid ), via the drinking water, during high ambient temperature for two strains of broilers. A total number of 342 chicks from " Arbor Acres and Lohmann broiler chicks " were used in this study. The additives were added with different leves ( 0.5% NaHCO3+0.5% KCl and 0.1% vit. C) to study their effects on the productive performance. Body weight, weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion, rectal temperature, respiration rate, carcass composition and some blood constituents under the condition of summer high ambient temperatures.
The results revealed the following:
- Overall mean live body weight of chick treated with vit.c, was the highhest whereas NaHCO3+KCl treated chicks was the lowest.
- On the other hand overall mean live body weight for strains was higher in Lohmann chicks than Arbor Acres ones.
- Over all mean feed conversion ratio for vit.C, treatment was higher than the other treatments.
- Rectal temperature was about 0.2C lower in 0.5 % NaHCO3+0.5%KCl treated birds than that of other treatments
- An increase in respiration frequency was associated with vit.C supplementation
- Lohmann chicks recorded the lowest mortality rate ( 1.2% ) compared to Arbor Acres ones ( 2.3%0)
- Lohmann chicks had a slightiy better liver function represented as lower GOT. GPT levels when compared with Arbor Acres strain
- Chicks that received chemical salts exhibited high significantiy water consumption rates when compared with either vit. C group or unsupplemented group ( control )
- Vit . C supplementation improved dressing carcass percentage by about 3% when compared with the other treatments
Key words : Ascorbic acid – Sodium bicarbonate – Potassium chloride broiler chicks – High ambient temperatures
