Abstract Agricultural cooperative is considered as one of the most important social organizations that plays a vital role in the Egyptian rural areas. It is pertained to economic sector and it has an economic and social dimensions that work strongly to push forward the Egyptian agriculture and standards of living in rural areas. The main objectives of this study were to identify agricultural cooperative's roles and different ways of activating those roles; and to identify the subjects of some independent variables in explaining the variance in roles of agricultural cooperative. The study was conducted during May 1999. A random sample of 170 respondents were selected from membership of agricultural cooperatives located in Tuk El-Kamal (Dakahlia governorate), EI-Aksas (Giza Governorate), and Nazlat Astir (Mcnia Governorate). A questionnaire and personal interviews were used in collecting the data. Frequencies, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, percentages, mode simple correlation coefficient, and step-wise forward regression were used in anal zing the data. The study findings indicated that there was a significant relationship (at 0.0: level) between each of the dependent variables (satisfaction with agricultural cooperative services, activities practiced by agricultural cooperative, and agricultural cooperative performance), and each of the following independent variables age, family size, average age of family members, land ownership, farm animal ownership. There was also a significant relationship (at 0.01 level) between the dependent variables (Ag. cooperative performance) and land ownership and farm animal ownership variables. Step-wise forward multiple regression was used with the dependent variables: Ag. cooperative practices to its activities, and it was found that the studied independent variables (land ownership, and farm animal ownership) explained together only 10% of the variance in the dependent variable. Similarly were the case with ag. cooperative performance (5.7%), and the overall role of agricultural cooperative (6.4%). The study drew the attention toward the promising importance of cooperative role in environmental development and improving roles of agricultural cooperative.
