Arabic : مستوى معرفة المصدرين للموالح بممارسات قطف وتداول الثمار فى بعض محافظات جمهورية جمهورية مصر العربية
Abstract The main objectives of this study were to: (1) Determine the Knowledge level of citrus exporting farmers regarding fruit picking and handling practices. (2) Determine the significant relationship between knowledge degrees of respondent farmers concerning fruit picking and handling practices and each of the studied independent variables. (3) Determine the contribution of some independent variables, which have significant correlation relationship, in interpreting knowledge degrees of respondent farmers regarding fruit picking and handling practices. (4) Determine the sources providing respondent farmers with information regarding fruit picking and handling practices. (5) Determine the extension services presented to citrus farmers by the extension staff in the research area. (6) Determine the constraints of citrus production and exportation facing respondent farmers from their point of view. The study was carried out in Beheira, Dakahlia, Gharbia, Motion is and Qalyoubia governorates for having the largest number of citrus exporting farmers through the last four seasons from 1995 to 1998 .The sample site amounted 135 respondents, It was determined from 209 citrus exporter farmers by using Morgan & Krejcie equation. The sample was distributed as follows: 19 respondents in each of Beheira and Dakahlia, 17 respondents in Gharbia, 43 respondents in Menoufia and 37 respondents in Qalyoubia. The data were collected by personal interviews using a pretested questionnaire during December 1998 and January 1999. Simple correlation coefficient, multiple correlation and regression analyses (step-wise) and means were used to analyze data statistically, in addition to frequencies, percentages and tables. the results of this study revealed that: 1. The Knowledge level of respondent farmers who export citrus crop was high regarding the majority of fruit picking and handling practices. 2. There was positive and significant relationship at 0.0 level between the total knowledge degrees of respondents and each of the following variables: degree of attitude toward agricultural extension and degree of mental flexibility. But this relationship was positive and significant at 0.05 level for respondent's education degree, From multiple correlation and regression analyses, only one variable contributed to 9.22% of the total variation explaining knowledge degrees of respondents regarding studied practices. This variable was the degree of attitude toward agricultural extension. 3. 'I he main sources of respondents' information were: horticultural extension specialist (76.30%), extension worker (74.81%), 1 V rural programs (63.70%) and broadcasting rural programs (50.37%). 4. Three extension services were offered to citrus respondent farmers by the extension staff in the research area. "I he respondents mentioned them with percentages ranged from 28.15% to 82.22% They were: Farm visits and monitoring (82.22%), holding extension meetings (43.70%) and provision extension pamphlets about citrus production (28.15%). 5. Three major constraints facing citrus production and exportation from respondents point of view were mentioned with percentages ranged from 20.74% to 61.48%. They were: Low prices of citrus at the local market (61.48%), and fruit exploitation because of pest infection (49.63%), high wages of agricultural laborers (43.70%). Based on the results of this study, there is a necessity to intensify extension educational efforts among citrus exporter farmers to remind them continuously with the knowledge concerning fruit picking and handling practices. On the other hand, citrus production and exporter farmers constraints should lie considered by the extension staff in the research area to help citrus exporter farmers to find the proper solutions for overcoming them. Undoubtedly, these extension activities will help citrus exporting farmers to increase their production, achieve better net income and motivate then) to increase citrus exportation rate in the near future.
