English : Selenium content in the soils originated from different parent materials

Abstract Thirty one soil samples were collected from different depths of eight profiles developed on three different parent materials in South Sinai; i.e. 11 samples from profiles Nos.1-3 (igneous), 8 samples from profiles Nos. 4-5 (metamorphic) and 12 samples from profiles Nos. 6-8 (sedimentary). Total and available selenium were determined in the collected soil samples. Data of total and available selenium content show that the distribution pattern throughout profile layers is no certain trend, depended upon the formation, weathering and deposition processes. The values of total selenium are higher in the soils originated from metamorphic rocks as a parent material followed by igneous, and the prior those originated from sedimentary one, where the mean values are 248, 227 and 126 ug/kg respectively. Available selenium of the soils originated from sedimentary rocks is the highest one followed by those of igneous, then metamorphic ones, where the mean values are 23, 20 and 13 ug/kg. This higher value of available Se in the soils developed on sedimentary may be attributed to the relatively high values of soil salinity and calcium carbonate. The released Se ratio (total:available) are 0.18, 0.09 and 0.05 for the soils of developed on sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. This explain that the available Se released from total Se in the studied soils represents a very low fraction of the total content
