The knowledge level of female extension workers concerning food pollution in Egyptian rural areas

| Abstract |
This study aimed to determine the knowledge level of Female Extension Workers concerning food pollution dimentions, identify the major variables affecting their knowledge level , determine their practice level to the ways of limiting food pollution at home in the
consumption stage, and the reasons for not practicing these ways .
Data were collected by personal interview using a pre tested questionnaire from a random sample amounting to 114 FEWs representing about 50 % of the total FEWs in the five choosen governorates. Simple correlation coefficient, Step-Wise , averages , standard deviation, coefficient of variation in addition to frequencies and percentages were used to present and analyze data statistically.
The results of this study revealed that
• The general knowledge level of FEWs concerning food pollution dimentions was low .
• The knowledge level of FEWs related to symtoms of food pollution was moderate , while it were low for concept , sources and ways of limiting food pollution .
• There were significant relationship between the knowledge degree of FEWs concerning food pollution dimentions and eight independent variables , The most important variables which explained about 64.19% of knowledge degree of FEWs were exposure to mass media , time period spent in extension work , and readiness to change .
• The practice level of 90.35 % of FEWs concerning the ways of limiting food pollution at home in the consumption stage were moderate or low .
• The most important reasons for not practicing these ways at home were : more time and effort requires, absenance of legislations that committing to limit food pollution during production and marketing stages that reflected on the consumption stage, lack of awarness about the importance of the ways to limit food pollution and unavailable facilities to pratice these ways effectivily.
