Arabic : الاحتياجات المعرفية الإرشادية لزراع الزيتون بمحافظتى سيناء الشمالية والجنوبية
Abstract The main objectives of this study were to: (t) Determine the knowledge need level of respondent farmers regarding Olive recommended practices. (2) Determine the independent variables that affect knowledge' need degrees of respondent farmers concerning Olive recommended practices. (3) Determine' the extension services presented to Olive farmers by the agricultural staff in the research area. (4) Determine the constraints of Olive production facing respondent farmers from their point of view. (S) Determine the constraints of Olive marketing facing respondent farmers from their point of view. El-Arieh valley and Abo-Swara villages were selected from Northern and Southern Sinai respectively. Olive cultivated area and the number of Olive farmers were the main criteria for that selection. A systematic random sample amounted 156 respondents was chosen representing MY* at least from the total Olive farmers in the selected two villages. Data were collected by personal interviews using a pretested questionnaire in July and August, 1997 . Simple correlation coefficient, multiple correlation and regression analysis (step-wise) and means were used to analyze data statistically in addition to frequencies and percentages. The results of this study revealed that: 1. The knowledge need level of Olive respondents was high regarding insects and diseases control. This level was moderate concerning the selection of proper land, farm preparation, hoeing , chemical fertilization and irrigation. But the knowledge need level was considered relatively low for the rest recommended practices. 2. From multiple correlation and regression analyses, three variables significantly affected the total knowledge need degrees of respondents (26.11%), They were: Degree of attitude toward change, Degree of exposure to mass media and family members education degree. 3. Four extension serf ices were offered to Olive farmers by the agricultural staff in the research area. The respondents mentioned them with percentages ranged from 35.26% to 97.44%. -1-hey were: Farm visits and monitoring (97.14%), providing farmers with technical advises(71.15%), informing farmers with the storage and pickling techniques (44.23'%.), and introducing information related to the available Olive presses in the area ( 35.26%). 4. Thirteen constraints facing Olive production from respondents points of view were mentioned with percentages ranged From 8.33% to 61.54%. The major constraints were as follows: shortage of irrigation water (61.54%), high prices of chemical fertilizers (45.51%), high costs of electricity using in irrigation (40.38%), lack of effective pesticides (35.26%), high prices of pesticides (33.33%), shortage of chemical fertilizers at the proper time (26.28%), lack of available resources for digging new wells (I7.95%), lack of trained agricultural man power (17.31%), unavailability of suitable agricultural machines (16.03%), lack of manure (14.74%), and tack of desired Olive transplants (12.82%). 5. Eleven constraints facing Olive marketing from respondents points of view were mentioned with percentages ranged from 3.85% to 69.87%. The main constraints were as follows: Insufficient proper marketing channels (69.87%), monopoly of Olive markets ( 33.97% ) , lack of Olive presses (19.87%), low prices of Olive crop (19.23%), difficulty of exporting procedures (17.31%), high costs of transportation (I4.10%), long distance between production centers and markets (12.I8%). Based on the results of this study, the needs of respondent farmers regarding Olive recommended practices should be considered in planning and implementing an extension program to improve the productivity of Olive crop in the coming seasons. On the other hand, the production and marketing constraints should lie considered by the extension staff in the research area to help Olive farmers to find the proper solutions for overcoming them. Undoubtedly, these extension activities will help Olive farmers to increase their net income and motivate them to enlarge the Olive cultivated area in the near future.
