Abstract Four field experiments were carried out at El-Gemmeiza Agricultural Research Station, ARC, Egypt during 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 seasons. These experiments were performed to study the effect of two preceding crops (rice and cotton), four sowing dates after rice (1 Oct., 15 Oct., 30 Oct. and 14 Nov.), four sowing dates after cotton (1 Nov., 15 Nov., 30 Nov,. and 14 Dec.) and three nitrogen levels (50, 75 and 100 kg N/fed.) on productivity of four wheat cultivars Gemmeiza 3, Gemmeiza 7, Gemmeiza 9, and Sakha 61. The results could be summarized as follows:- Plant height, spike length, number of spikes/m2, number and weight of grains per spike and 1000-grain weight as well as, grain and straw yields of wheat were significant where wheat sown after cotton was better than that sown after rice. Sowing dates significantly effected on plant height, spike length, number of spikes/m2, number and weight of grains/spike, 1000-grain weight, grain and straw yields in both seasons. The highest values of these characters were recorded for the Nov.15th sowing date either after rice or cotton, and increased with increasing nitrogen level up to 100 kg N/fed. Gemmiza7 surpassed the other cultivars in plant height, spike length, number and weight of grains/spike, while, Gemmeiza 9 surpassed them in the number of spikes/m2 and straw yield/fed but difference between Gemmeiza 7 and Gemmeiza 9 no reach the level of significance in grain yield/fed. Grain and straw yield/fed. were significantly effected by the interaction between sowing dates and nitrogen levels, as well as, sowing dates and cultivars. The highest yield was obtained when sowing was made on Nov. 15th with the addition of 100 kg N/fed either after cotton or rice using Gemmeiza 9 wheat cultivar.
