English : Photosynthetic and N-use efficiencies for some wheat cultivars in relation to planting density and nitrogen fertilization level

Abstract Planting density i.e. 200, 300 or 400 seeds/m2 and nitrogen fertilizer level (0, 60 and 90 kg/fed.) for three wheat cultivars (Gemmeiza 7, Gemmeiza 9 and Sakha 93) were studied under Gemmeiza Agricultural Research Station. Data were recorded on leaf-chlorophyll content, total dry matter/m2 (DM), leaf area index (LAI), net assimilation rate (NAR), crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), yield and yield components, grain protein %, grain N-uptake and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Results revealed that Gemmeiza 7, Gemmeiza 9 surpassed Sakha 93 in chlorophyll content, DM accumulation, NAR, CGR, RGR, number and weight of grains/spike, 1000-grain weight and grain N-uptake. NUE did not differ among the grown cultivars. Although Gemmeiza 7 recorded the lowest number of spikes/m2 it was superior in number and weight of grains/spike and 1000-grains weight compared with the other two cultivars. The heavy planting densities (300 and 400 seed/m2) increased DM accumulation, LAI, CGR, number of spikes/m2, plant height, grain and straw yields and grain-N uptake. Applied nitrogen level up to 90 kg N/fed. increased chlorophyll content, DM accumulation, LAI, CGR, RGR, NAR, number of spikes/m2 number and weight of grains/spike, plant height, grain and straw yields, grain protein content and grain N-uptake. NUE efficiency was insignificantly decreased due to raising N-level from 60 to 90 kg/fed. Plants of Gemmeiza 7 sown with 400 seeds/m2 achieved the highest DM (85 DAP) in the second season and the highest CGR in the two seasons. Plants of Gemmeiza 7 fertilized with 90 kg N/fed. gave the highest DM accumulation/m2 at (105 DAP), whereas plants of Gemmeiza 9 fertilized with the same nitrogen rate recorded the highest LAI (85 DAP) and CGR in the second season. Wheat plants sown with 400 seeds/m2 and fertilizeds with 90 kg N/fed. achieved the highest CGR and produced more tall plants in the first season, grain and straw yields and increased grain N-uptake in both seasons. This work recommends growing Gemmeiza 7 and Gemmeiza 9 cultivars using 400 seeds/m2 and 90 kg N/fed. For achieving high grain and straw yields with high grain protein content under Gemmeiza zone condition
