Arabic : الإحتياجات الإرشادية لزراع الفراولة فى مركزى شبين القناطر وطوخ بمحافظة القليوبية
Abstract The main objectives of this study were to: (I) Determine the knowledge need level of respondent farmers regarding Strawberry recommended practices. (2) Determine the need level of respondent farmers to implement Strawberry recommended practices. (3) Determine the significant differences between the knowledge need level of respondent farmers and their need level to implement Strawberry recommended practices. (4) Determine the independent variables that affect knowledge need degrees of respondent farmers concerning Strawberry recommended practices. (5) Determine the independent variables that affect need degrees of respondent farmers to implement Strawberry recommended practices. (6) Determine the constraints of Strawberry production and marketing facing respondent farmers from their points of view. Four villages were selected from Shebeen El-Kanater and Toukh districts in Qalyoubia governorate. Strawberry cultivated area and the number of Strawberry farmers were the main criteria for that selection. A systematic random sample amounted 174 respondents was chosen representing 10% from the total Strawberry' farmers in the selected four villages. Data were collected by personal interviews using a pretested questionnaire in July and August, 1993. "Z" test, Simple Correlation Coefficient. Multiple Correlation and Regression analysis (Step-Wise) and Means were used to analyze data statistically. Frequencies and percentages were used to present some data of this study. The results of this study revealed that. I_ The knowledge need level of Strawberry respondents was high regarding using plastic for Strawberry planting and soil sterilization_ This level was moderate concerning planting date, potassium fertilization and diseases control. But the knowledge need level was considered relatively low for the rest recommended practices. 2 The respondents' need level was high for implementing planting date, soil sterilization and using plastic for Strawberry planting. This level was moderate regarding nitrogen and potassium fertilization, diseases control and packing But the respondents' need level for implementing the rest recommended practices was considered relatively low. 3. There were significant differences at 0.01 level between knowledge need level of respondents and their need level of implementation regarding planting date, appropriate soil, land preparation, soil sterilization, using plastic for Strawberry planting, nitrogen and potassium fertilization, irrigation, pest control, harvesting and packing. But the difference was significant at 0.05 level for Strawberry cultivation method. 4. From multiple correlation and regression analyses, seven variables significantly affected the knowledge need degrees of respondents (30.16%). They were; Strawberry cultivated area, years of experience in Strawberry cultivation, Strawberry yield per feddan, leadership degree, farm holding size, degree of formal social participation and degree of attitude toward agricultural extension. Also, five variables significantly affected the need degrees of respondents to implement Strawberry recommended practices (20.29%). ['hey were Strawberry cultivated area, years of experience in Strawberry cultivation, degree of contact with the agricultural service centers, number of information sources and Strawberry yield per feddan 5. Fifteen constraints facing Strawberry production from respondents points of view were mentioned with percentages ranged from 37.36% to 95 98%. The major constraints were as follows: high prices of transplants (95.98%), high prices of chemical fertilizers (90.80%), nursery diseases infection (90.23%), high prices of pesticides (85.63%), high wages of agricultural laborers (74.71%), high prices of transportation (65.52%), lack of effective pesticides (58.05%), high prices of renting irrigation machines (56.90%)., low level of irrigation water in canals (54.60%), lack of appropriate packs (43.10%), unavailability of refrigerators in the area of study (42.53%). Based on the results of this study, the needs of respondent fanners regarding Strawberry recommended practices should be considered in planning and implementing an extension program to improve the productivity of Strawberry crop in the coming seasons.
