Arabic : الاحتياجات المعرفية الإرشادية لزراع محصول الكمثرى ببعض قرى محافظتى المنوفية والبحيرة
Abstract The objectives of this study were to: (1 )Determine the knowledge needs level of respondent farmers regarding the recommended practices of producing and marketing pear. (2) Determine the relationship between the knowledge need degrees of respondent farmers regarding Pear recommended practices and some independent variables. (3) Determine the constraints facing respondent Pear farmers in producing and marketing Pear crop from their points of view. (4) Determine the sources providing respondent Pear farmers with information regarding Pear production and marketing. A systematic random sample amounted to 199 pear farmers was selected from seven villages in four districts in Menoufia and Beheira Governorates. The selected villages were as follows: Telwana and El-Khadra villages in El-Bagour district. Manial El-Arous and Sakiat Abou-Shaara villages in Ashmoun district, Men oufia Governorate. From Beheira Governorate, the following three villages were selected: Barseek and El-Drawia villages from Abou-Homous district and Kabaniet Abou-Keer village from Kafr El-Dawar district. Data were, collected by personal interviews using a pretest questionnaire in June 1995 Simple Correlation Coefficient, Multiple Correlation and Regression Analysis (Step-wise), Factorial Analysis and Means were used to analyze data statistically, in addition to frequencies and percentages. The results of this study revealed that: 1- the knowledge needs level of respondent Pear farmers was high regarding: Pest control, hoeing, irrigation, sorting and grading pear. This level was moderate regarding: winter prunging, micro elements fertilization, maturation signs, tree service in the first year, summer pruning, selection of the proper soil, manure and chemical fertilization and packing. Whereas that level was low in related to selection of appropriate variety, transplants cultivation in the permanent field and harvesting. 2- -From multiple correlation and regression analysis, three variables significantly affected the knowledge need degrees of respondent Pear farmers (25.3%) they were: degree of mass media exposure, degree of satisfaction about cultivated variety and degree of formal social participation. These variables must be considered by extension personnel during dissemination of recommended practices among Pear farmers in order to increase their knowledge level. 3- There were seven factors explaining the following major constraints facing respondent Pear farmers in producing and marketing Pear crops. They were: (1) long distance between market and production centers; (2) lack of transportation; (3) high prices of packages; (4) lack of information regarding market prices; (5) insufficient activities of marketing extension; (6). using inappropriate packages: and (7) absence of agricultural cooperatives rote in helping small-scale producers for marketing their crops. 4- The main sources of respondents' information were neighbours (76.4%), extension workers (52.8%), subject matter specialists (45.7%) researchers (31.7%) and private sector employees(19.1%).The main extension methods which were preferred by the majority of respondent farmers to get their needed information of producing and marketing Pear crops were as follows: field visits, TV rural programs, extension meetings and extension leaflets.
