Abstract |
This study was conducted to determine the effect of increasing ambient temperature from 25°C to 35°C on fasting nitrogen metabolism and protein requirements for maintenance (RCP) of Egyptian Nubian goats. Eight mature bucks were divided into two groups. The first group was kept in climatic chamber under constant temperature 25°C and the second group was kept in another climitic chamber under constant temperature 35°C.
Bucks were individually housed in metabolic cages. Metabolic fecal nitrogen (MFN) and endogenous urinary nitrogen (EUN) were determined for fasted goats for 14 days.
Protein requirement for maintenance was calculated ITom the EUN and MFN. The values for MFN, EUN and RCP were 1.397 glh/d, 0.354 g/h/d and 2.45 g CP /Kg W075 for goats under 25°C whereas the corresponding values for goats under 35°C were 1.185 g/h/d.
0.244 gIh/d and 1.9 g CPIKg W075. The reduction in RCP values of goats under 35°C than goats under 25°C could be part integrated in general reduction in the metabolic heat production in counteraction to the high environmental temperature.
Keywords: goat, heat stress, fasting, protein, maintenance.
