English : Study of relative importance to utilized and preferred extension methods in citrus crop production field
Arabic : دراسة الأهمية النسبية للطرق الإرشادية المستخدمة والمفضلة فى مجال إنتاج محصول الموالح
Abstract This study was carried out aiming for determining the citrus farmers knowledge and implementation level and differences in them due to the differences in their exposure to various utilized extension teaching methods. Also for determining the relative import¬ance of the utilized and prefered extension methods. Besides the major variables affecting their preferability to the extension te¬aching methods. Data were collected by personal interview for a systematic random sample amounting to 18O citrus farmers in Sherkia , Beheira and Qualubiah governorates. Analysis of variance " F" test, L . S . R of Danken , and qui square test were util¬ized as statistical criteria for presentation and analysis of collected data. The major results revealed the following items: 1- There was a high level of the interviewees' knowledge related to the agricultural processes of howeing, fertilization, trans-planting , loading crops and pruning , while it was moderate related to the agricultural processes of collecting fruits , features of transplants , irrigation , and land preparation and it was low related to diseases and pest control. 2- There was a high level of interviewees implementation related to the agricultural processes of fertilization and transplanting, while it was moderate related to the agricultural .processes of howeing, loading crops , collecting fruits and pruning and it was low related to the agricultural processes of land preparat¬ion, features of transplants, irrigation and diseases and peat control . 3- There was differences in interviewee 'knowledge and implementa¬tion due to differences in their exposure to various extension teaching methods where the field visits, then extension demons¬tration fields and than office calls took the first strata whe¬ther for knowledge or implementation of citrus recommendations. 4- Related to the relative importance of utilized extension teaching methods in advicing citrus interviewees it was found that these relative importance could be arranged in a descending order to field visits , extension demonstration fields, office calls, extension meetings, rural broadcasted programs, rural televized programs, extension publications and finally posters. 5- Related to the preferability of interviewees for the utilized extension teaching methods, it almost agreed with the prementi¬oned relative importance where field visits and extension demonstration fields were highly preferred , while office calls, rural broadcasted programs, rural telivized programs and extension mee¬tings were moderately preferred and finally both the extension publications and posters were lowly preferred. 6- Related to the relationship between the degree of the preferability level of interviewees for extension teaching methods and some independent variables, it was found that: a- Individual contact methods represented in field visits and offiece calls are preferred by those who are older in age, somewhat educated, professioned in agriculture only, doing agricultural work by themselves, having small size families relatively large land holders, having relative long experie¬nce in 'citrus production , marketing citrus products in near by markets and haveconcern with agricultural innovations. b- Group contact methods represented in extension demonstration fields and extension meetings are preferred by those who are professioned only in agricultural , doing agricultural work by themselves , large number of their families participate in agricultural work, and having relatively lage areas cultivated with citrus crop. c- Maas-media methods represented in rural broadcasted and televised programs are preferred by those who are relatively older in large, professioned only agricultural, large numbers of their families participate in agricultural work and have concern with agricultural innovations, while extension publications and posters are preferred by those who are relatively educated and having long experience in producing citrus crops . All the prementioned research results demand from horticult - rural responsible bodies, the importance and necessity of concentra¬ting when directing any extension message in citrus crop on field visits by horticultural specialists to citrus gardens and increasing their rates, generalization of citrus extension demonstration fields in all villages where citrus crop is sown, specifing suitable places and timing for office calls in the agricultural co-operatives for meeting farmers and answering their questions and problems, caring about holding periodical extension meetings and increasing the timing specified for directing citrus extension messages in both rural broadcasted or televised programs and taking in consideration directing the extension teaching methods in a way which suits the personal diffe¬rences among farmers . All of that if cared about will lead to the success in diffusing and communicating the extension messages related to the citrus recommendations leading to the sure increase in citrus productivity.
