English : Pedigree selection and independent culling levels methods in sesame (sesamum indicum l.)

Abstract The present study was carried out at Shandaweel Research Station, Sohag, Egypt during 2000-2003 summer seasons. The breeding material used in this study were the F3, F4, F5 and F6 generations from two crosses, i.e., introductions 413 x 777 ( population 1 ) and Bengalian 8 x Giza 32 (population II) . The objective was to compare the efficiency of pedigree selection for seed yield per se, and independent culling levels in improving seed yield. Highly significant differences among F3 families and satisfactory genotypic coefficients of variability and large magnitude of broad sense heritability were obtained for all the studied traits. The results indicate that the genetic coefficient of variability of seed yield/plant in populations I and II decreased greatly from the F3 ( 22.50 and 25.82%) to the third cycle ( F6) either for single trait selection ( 3.66 and 4.18%) or independent culling levels procedures ( 4.97 and 4.79%), respectively . The realized heritability in the two studied populations for seed yield/plant was low compared to that estimated on the basis of means of the three replications at one location ( 35.20 and 40.30% ) either pedigree selection ( 22.50 and 30.30%) or independent culling levels procedure ( 24.30 and 19.60%), respectively. Three cycles of pedigree selection increased seed yield by 28.64 and 31.53% from the bulk sample compared to 14.75 and 19.46% for ICL in populations I and II respectively
