Abstract Four experiments (two in males and two in females) were conducted to evaluate the effects of feed restriction at early age of broiler chicks on performance, carcass characteristics and meat yield. Low protein diet (14% CP) or maintenance diet (1.5 x BW2/3 Kcal ME/bird/day) was applied on males (Expl) and on females (Exp2). Low sodium diet was used in Exp3 (males) and Exp4 (females). Feed restriction began at 7 days of age and was applied for different periods. The results showed that: - applying feed restriction using low protein diet for 3 days improved the overall performance parameters of male broiler chicks. - using maintenance diet or applying feed restriction for more than 3 days could be characterized as severe program of feed restriction and birds were not able to compensate losses in weight. - male broiler chicks restricted on their feed intake using low- Na diet for 3 days accelerated their growth rate and fully compensated their weight and even achieved more body weight at the marketing age compared to the control. Birds restricted for 6 or 9 days failed to catch up comparable body weight. - female broilers did not respond to feed restriction programs as males. - carcass characteristics and meat yield were affected by both method and duration of feed restriction and also sex of birds. - more research is needed to fully understand the mechanism of compensatory growth after feed restriction and to detect the best conditions of feed restriction in broiler chicks.
