response to nitrogen-fixing bacteria inoculation

Abstract |
The influence of bacterial inoculants on the growth of wheat cv. Sakha 93 was studied in a field experiment at Kalubia, Egypt (2001-2002). Azotobacter chroococcum, Bacillus polymyxa and Azospirillum brasilense were inoculated individually to wheat either by grain coating or by spray application and also both together. Wheat plants received the recommended nitrogen level (75kg N fed-l) as ammonium nitrate. Results indicate that bacterial inoculation led to significant increases in grain yield, ash, dry gluten, grain protein and flour extraction rate. Inoculation methods (grain coating or spray application and also both together) gave significant increases in 1000-grain weight, total carbohydrates, dry gluten and flour extraction rate. Data revealed that inoculation with N 2-jixating bacteria increased some rheological properties like water absorption, mixing time and stability time, consequently, improved wheat dough quality. Total count of bacteria in wheat plants rhizosphere significantly increased as a result of inoculation when determined at the period of 30 and 60 days from sowing. Also, inoculation methods Jhat considered as an influence factor had significantly increased total count of bacteria after 30 days from sowing. Data revealed that inoculation before and after sowing (grain coating and spray application) gave the best results concerning wheat yield and grain quality
