Effect of dietary cadmium supplementation on broiler performance and economic efficiency

| Abstract |
This study was undertaken to determine the effect of dietary cadmium (Cd) supplementation on the broiler performance, some hematological parameters, concentration of Cd within breast muscle tissue and economic efficiency. Therefore, 120 one day old broiler chicks (Arbor Acres) were randomly distributed into four groups. These groups were received 0, 40, 80 and 120 ppm Cd (as cadmium sulfate). Birds were fed the experimental diets from one day till six weeks.
Main results could be summarized as follows:
-The body weight and body weight gain were significantly reduced (P< 0.001) at all levels of dietary Cd.
-Total feed consumption was markedly decreased at all levels of dietary Cd Also, feed conversion ratio deteriorated in groups fed diets added 40, 80 and 120 ppm Cd.
- Metabolizable energy required to gain one unit of live body weight was increased at all levels of Cd.
- Performance index was significantly depressed at all levels of dietary Cd.
- The liver, heart, kidney, bursa and gizzard weight (expressed as percent of body weight ) increased significantly with diet containing 120 PPm Cd.
- Hematocrit value, plasma calcium and phosphorus decreased significantly with highest concentration of dietary Cd.
- GOT and GPT activities increased significantly in birds fed diets added 80 and 120 PPm Cd.
- The concentration of Cd within breast muscle tissue increased progressively with increasing in dietary levels of Cd.
- Economic efficiency of the broiler chicks was precisely decreased at all levels of dietary Cd.
