Abstract |
This study was conducted at the Animal Production Research Institute (APRI) during the year 1999-2000. The objective of this work was to what extent the potato waste could be utilized efficiently in poultry feeding. This was done through biological treatment by different fungi and then introducing the product in broiler diets instead of part of SBM and YC.
Three parts of study were conducted. At first, four fungi were used to upgrade the nutritive value of raw potato waste (RPW). The second part was directed to evaluate the treated products by different fungi (PWC , PWT,PWP ,PWPh) in addition to raw (RPW) and autoclaved potato waste (APW)chemically and biologically. Chemical analysis include the proximate analysis, crude fiber fractionation, tannins, phenols and limiting amino acids. The biological evaluation included six digestion trials using adult Mandarah cockerels in which digestibilities and metabolizabilites were determined indirectly compared with yellow corn. The best treatment occurred from chemical and biological evaluation was PWP. Therefore, in the third part of study, five non-conventional diets were formulated by using five different levels of PWP being 5,10,15,20 and 25% in addition to the control diet to investigate the effect on broiler performance, blood biochemical content and economical efficiency.
The experimental diets were of isonutritive value either at growing ( 22% CP and 3100 Kcal ME / Kg) or at finishing ( 20% CP and 3200 Kcal.
ME/Kg) period.
Results obtained indicated that the fungi degraded the potato waste, increased the CP content and decreased crude fiber as well as their fractions being cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Moreover, both the tannins and phenols were decreased by fungi treatment. Digestion coefficient of treated potato waste were increased in addition, fungi treatments improved the metabolizable energy and amino acid content. From the performance results, data showed that PWP could be used till 25% in broiler diets which gave good growth, better feed utilization and higher economic revenue. However, 10% of PWP surpassed all levels.
