Abstract Two varieties of peanut ( Arachis hypogaea L.)namely Giza4 and Giza5 were treated with gamma ray doses; 10, 15, 20, 25Kr in order to induce genetic variability and to study the importance of the relative contribution of peanut yield components by employing some statistical procedures, i.e. simple correlation, multiple linear regression and stepwise regression analysis. The results showed that, there was significant positive correlation between seed yield/plant and no. of pods/plant, 100 pod weight, 100 seed weight, shelling percentage and pod yield/plant, and there was significant positive correlation between pod yield/plant and no of pods/plant, no of seed/plant, 100 pod weight and 100 seed weight. The multiple linear regression analysis clearly showed that the relative contribution ( R2 %) of the yield components, no. of pods/plant, no. of seed/plant and shelling % were the most important variables contributing toward seed yield/plant (90.35%), meanwhile, no. of seeds/plant, shelling% and oil content % were the most important variables contributing toward pod yield/plant( 82.36%). Accepted and removed variables and the relative contributions (R2 %) in predicting seed yield/plant and pod yield/plant were cleared by stepwise multiple linear regression analysis, the ( R2 %) values were 90.96% and 83.09% of the total variation in the seed yield/plant and pod yield/plant, respectively. Coefficient of determination (R2) and standard error of estimates showed no significant differences between the full model regression and stepwise technique, however, the efficiency expressed is due, in fast to the reduction in number of variables, in the equation from all variables ( full model regression ) to six variables only for seed yield/plant and five variables only for pod yield/plant (stepwise regression). The important variables over all three statistical procedures (correlation- multiple linear regression and stepwise multiple linear regression ) for seed yield/plant and pods yield/plant were no. of pods/plant, no. of seeds/ plant and shelling percentage.
