English : Some nutritional and physiological aspects of heat-stressed rabbits as affected by diuretics and/ or gn-rh

Abstract A total of sixty New-Zealand White (NZW) male rabbits aged 3 months and weighed 1347 gm were used in the present study. The study included 2 periods, pre- and post- sexual maturity and aimed to investigate the effects of Diuretics and /or Gn-RH on the performance of heat-stressed rabbits drank cool water. The animals were divided into 4 comparable experimental groups (15 males per group). The first group (G1) was kept untreated and served as a control, while the other three groups were drunk cool water and either administrated orally with 3 mg Thiametrene/ animal/ day (G2) or injected intramuscularly with 4 µg Gn-RH/ animal/ week (G3) or treated with Thiametrene + Gn-RH (G4). All animals were fed a commercial diet according to NRC (1977) recommendations. The obtained results showed that daily weight gain and feed intake as well as feed efficiency were significantly (P? 0.05) higher due to Diuretics and/ or Gn-RH. Treating the heat-stressed rabbits with Diuretics and/ or Gn-RH caused decreases (P? 0.05) in rectal, skin and ear- lobe temperatures and respiration and pulse rates. Reproductive capabilities of rabbit bucks represented by libido, semen quality, gonads and pituitary gland weights as well as testicular index improved (P? 0.05) by using Diuretics and/ or Gn-RH during the hot summer months. The Diuretics administration was better (P?0.05) than Gn-RH injection for body weight improvement, meanwhile greater improvement was obtained by Diuretics and Gn-RH treatment. However, the reproductive traits were better (P?0.05) improved by Gn-RH rather than Diuretics, while Diuretics and Gn-RH treatment caused a greater improvement. It is concluded that Diuretics with Gn-RH treatment has a beneficial effect (P?0.05) on productive and reproductive performance of NZW male rabbits, which superior the effect of Diuretics or Gn-RH alone. Key words: rabbits, Diuretics, Gn-RH, heat stress, performance
