Abstract The effectiveness of AIl strain Steinernema carpocapsae (S.c.}, Heterorhabditiis bacteriophora HP88 (H.b. HP88) and Heterorhabditis sp. Sl (H.sp.Sl) alone or combining with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Dipel 2X againsí the greater sugarcane borer, Sesamia cretica Led. were determined in laboratory and field experiments. Laboratory treatments revealed that the 2nd instar larvae of S. cretica were more susceptible to nematodes than the 4ih and the 6lh larval instars. H.b. HP88 was more effective against different larval instars followed by S.c. then H.sp.Sl. The combination of the nematode species with Bt was efficient than using each alone, causing an additive effect in controlling 5. cretica larvae, at the mixing with high nematode concentrations. Field trials were conducted at Sakha Research Station, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate during the maize seasons 2003 and 2004. Bt (200g /feddan) and nematodes (5000 IJs /plant) were sprayed alone or in combination (Bt plus nemaíodes both at half rate), in the plant tunnels, significantly reduced the number of larvae when compared to control, during the two seasons. In season of 2003, the percentage reduction of larval mortality ranged between 42.15 and 63.16% for H.b. HP88 and S.c.+Bt, while ranged between 60.78 and 74.51 % for S.c. and H.sp.S1+Bt, at 2004. In 2003 and 2004, the treatments of S.c.+Bt and H.b. HP88+Bt or H.sp.S1+Bt suppression of the damage in maize plants was greater than those sprayed with Bt, S.c., H.b. HP88 or H.sp.Sl alone. Based on these results, combination of the nematodes and Bt is efficient as bio-agents for controlling, S. cretica larvae.
