The extension knowledge needs of lentils farmers in Sharkia governorate.

| Abstract |
Lentils crop has been introduced recently in Sharkia governorate. Due to the continuous expansion of its cultivated area and the unfamiliarity of farmers to grow it, this study was conducted to determine the knowledge need level of respondents about extension recommendations of lentils crop, the co¬nstraints which were faced by them in lentils production, the differences be¬tween their levels of knowledge need pertaining to the studied personal vari¬ables and to develop extension plan of work to increase lentils productivity in Sharkia governorate .
Mashtool Al-Sook, Zagazig and Minia Al-Kamh districts were chosen in Sharkia governorate for having the largest cultivated area of lentils crop in Sharkia, and the majority of farmers cultivating it in the season of 1985-1986. According to these two bases, three villages were chosen and a systematic ran¬dom sample amounted to 110 respondents was selected in these three villages as follows:42 respondents from Nabtiet village in Mashtool Al-Souk, 45 res¬pondents from Meit Abou - Aly village in Zagazig and 23 respondents from Meit Saheel in Minia Al-Kamh . The data were collected by personal interviews during June 1986 . Anova test and "F" ratio was used to test the study hypothesis
The results of the study revealed that :
A- The knowledge need level of respondents was high about the extension recom¬mendations related to control the diseases of vine mildew, downy mildew of vine and rust.
B- The knowledge need level of respondents was moderate about the extension recommendations of paralysis prevention, number of irrigations, recomm¬ended variety, sowing date and land preparation.
C- The knowledge need level of respondents was low about the other extension recommendations.
D- Seven constraints on lentils production were mentioned by the respondents with low percentages ranging between 1.8%, 18.2% .
E- There were significant differences at 0.05 level between the levels of respondents' knowledge need related to their educational level and cultiv¬ated area of lentils . As to the other personal variables, the differences were not significant .
This result shows that there is no differences between knowledge need level of respondents regardless the variation of their personal characteristics.
According to the previous results, the study suggested an extension plan of work to meet both high and moderate levels of knowledge needs of lentils farmers . It will enable the extension personnel to help the farmers to raise the productivity rates of lentils crop in Sharkia governorate .
