Abstract The study aims to evaluate three bedding materials; wheat straw, fine sawdust, wood shaving and their effect on ducks performance, during the growing and laying periods. In this study a total number of 448 day-old unsexed Domyati ducklings were used. All ducklings were weighed, legs banded and randomly divided into three groups. The first group was reared on wheat straw, the second group was reared on fine sawdust while the third one was reared on wood shaving during the period from hatching up to the first 90 days of egg production. Results showed that means of live body weight in general increased with the advance in age. Ducklings reared on fine sawdust were heavier than those reared on the other materials. The differences among treatments were highly significant. Males were superior in their body weight compared with females allover the period of study, while this superiority was highly significantly at 12 weeks of age. Growth rate was faster at the first period of age (from hatching up to 12 week) than the following period (from16 up to-20 weeks of age). Ducklings reared on fine sawdust were faster in growth rate and also males grow faster than females. The results proved that ducklings reared on fine sawdust consumed little food compared to the other two treatments and characterized by superior in feed conversion. Duckling reared on fine sawdust scored highest mortality rate (7.43%) than both those reared on wheat straw (5.96%) and those reared on wood shaving (4.69%) up to 6 weeks of age. Results did not show any mortality rate from 6 weeks of age up to the end of experiment. The results indicated that shank length or body depth increased with the advance in age. Shank length was influenced significantly by litter type and sex at all ages studied, while treatments and sex did not affect body depth. Carcass traits for ducklings reared on wheat straw scored high value in percentages of feather, carcass, heart, fore- & hind- quarter as compared with those reared on the other two treatments. Egg quality (egg shape, egg components, shell thickness and Haugh units) were not influenced by different type of litter.
