English : Fattening of barki lambs on all concentrate ration: on-farm study in north western coastal zone of Egypt .
Arabic : تسمين الحملان البرقي علي العلائق المركزة : تجربة في حقول المربيين بالساحل الشمالي الغربي لمصر .
Abstract Total of 310 weaned Barki lambs were used in the present study to evaluate the effect of feeding all concentrate ration on fattening performance of lambs under the Bedouin farmer conditions. The present study was carried out in four sub regions in the Matrouh resources management project area in eight farms. The breeders supplied animals, pen, labor and the grains, while the project provided the soybean meal, mineral blocks and veterinary care. The concentrate mixture consisted of 83.0% grains (barley and/or blemish wheat ), 15.0% soybean meal, 1.5% limestone and 0.5% common salt. Concentrate and water were available 24 hours a day. Animals were weighted and changes in body weight were recorded biweekly. Initial body weight ranged from 12.0to21.0kg with an average of 17.0 kg , while marketing live weight ranged from 24.5 to 41.5 kg with an average of 31.4 kg . Average daily gain (ADG) ranged from 207 to 278 g among the eight farms with an average of 223 g . Feed conversion ratio ( kg feed / kg live body weight ) ranged from 4.024 – 5.195 kg with an average of 4.364 kg . The economic analysis showed that net profit per head markedly differed among the farms due to fattening period , Marketing price and time and ranged from 35.0 to 82.8 LE with an average of 63.6 LE . Costs of one – kg weight gain averaged 3.6 LE and ranged from 3.078 to 4.790 LE among the eight farms . Total benefit / total costs ranged from 1.166 to 1.462 with an average of 1.300 and cash benefit / cash costs ranged from 1.250 to 1.503 with an average of 1.379 . It could be concluded that the new system of fattening of early – weaned lambs is profitable business for sheep producers and helpful to relief the pressure on natural range by removing lambs as well as ensuring the best use of the natural feed resources. Keywords: lamb fattening, daily gain, feed conversion, economics.
