English : Effect of surface and subsurface drib irrigation systems with different water salinity on the distribution of soil salinity and tomato yield in south sinai

Abstract To evaluate the comparative study between surface and subsurface drip irrigation system under saline irrigation water, field experiments were carried out at the farms of El-Gebeel area at south Sinai-Egypt. Tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum L., G.S. variety) were transplanted and irrigated with irrigation water of four salinity levels; 1.90, 3.98, 6.20 and 10.00 dS m-1 which are dominant in this area. Fresh water was used as a control (0.88 dSm-1). Results obtained indicated that the rate of salt accumulation in the first layer (0-20 cm) was relatively higher in soil irrigated with using subsurface drip system than that under surface drip irrigation system, while the second layer had relatively low value of salt accumulation under subsurface drip irrigation system compared with surface drip irrigation. Tomato yield decreased in the successive seasons under salinity stress, but under subsurface drip irrigation the decreases of yield are lower than under surface drip irrigation, moreover sub-surface drip irrigation may enhance the commercial yield compared to surface drip irrigation. Water use efficiency was significantly reduced with increasing irrigation water salinity. Water use efficiency was higher in subsurface drip irrigation system compared with surface drip irrigation one.
