English : Validation of Mythyl Bromide Method of Analysis and Monitoring of its residues in dry plants in Egypt
Abstract Validation of methyl bromide method of analysis on dry plants samples by applying of quality control and quality assurance program with statistical analysis was studied throughout the present investigation. The method allows determining of methyl bromide (CH3Br) as inorganic bromide. It has spiked on cereals, herbs, and dry fruits with 95-115 % recovery and the relative standard deviation are 6.6 % for dry samples. The method showed linear relationship up to 50 mg/kg with a limit of determination (LOD) 1 mg/kg. The measurement uncertainty on 95 % confidence level is less than12 %. A total 203 samples of 113 cereals and pulse, 86 herbs and aromatic plants, and 4 dry fruit samples were collected from eight Egyptian governorates (Cairo, Giza, Gharbiya, Minufiya, Sharkiya, Beni Suef , Ismailia and Qalyubiya) during January 2002 -December 2003 were monitored for determination of methyl bromide residues. Residues were detected and compared with Maximum Residue Limit (MRLs) of methyl bromide established by Codex Alimentarius Committee (CAC).Although contamination percentage in herbs and dates samples with methyl bromide were 80 and 50% respectively, there were no samples contained methyl bromide higher than MRLs. On the other hand, the contamination of cereal samples 46% whileas 21% of these samples were contained methyl bromide exceeded the MRLs. The high violation of methyl bromide for cereals'" is due to the violated cowpea samples (39%). The most contaminated and violated cowpea samples with methyl bromide in the studied governorates were found in the order of 100 & 100% for Qalyubiya, 100 & 66.7% for Ismailia, 80 & 60% for Beni suef, 60 & 60% for Sharkiya,62 & 38.5% for Cairo,55.6& 27.8% for Giza and 25 &25% for Minufiya, respectively. Only Gharbiya governorate has free from any violated cowpea samples with methyl bromide residues. A survey on most Egyptian governorates retails for cereals, herbs and dry fruit products to detect the contamination levels of methyl bromide were sought. It showed less contamination at 2003 than 2002 which consisted with Montreal Protocol, 1997 for banned to use of this fumigant.
