Abstract The true spider, dictyna lateens (fabricius) was fed on two different prey species, 1st instar larvae of cotton leafworm, spodoptera littoralis (boisd.) and adult females of the two-spotted spider mite, tetranychus urticae koch, with the aim of studying the effect of the kind of prey on the duration of immature stages and its importance as a biological control agent. The incubation period of eggs lasted 7 days when D. lateens fed on 1st instar larvae of s. littoralis, both males and females of the spider pass through 6 spiderlings during its life span. Total duration of these spiderlings of male lasted 65.8±10.78 days when they consumed an average of 300.6±59.58 of s. littoralis 1st instar larvae per individual. Total duration of the six spiderlings of females lasted 102.51±22.42 when they consume on average of 438.51±99.32 prey individual. Dictyna lateens could not complete its life cycle when it was fed on adult females of the common spider mite tetranychus urticae. Lt was found that incubation period of both male and female lasted 7.0±0.0 days. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd spiderlings lasted 8.6±0.5, 7.0±0.0 and 8.0±1.15 days, respectively, when they consume on average of 133.35±20.09, 182.5±23.65 and 245.0±5.77 prey individual, respectively. Only 1/5 of the individuals passed through the 3rd spiderling.
