Abstract |
Three representative soil profiles represent the main Taxonomic units in Egypt, (i.e., Vertisols, Aridisols and Entisols orders) were selected. Their locations are belonging to Fayoum, Western Desert and Menofiya areas, respectively. The studied soil profiles were morphologically described at the field and soil micromorphology investigation was carried out in the lab. The microfabric description of the Vertisols exhibited the common feature of subparallel joint planes which is confirmed, morphologically, slickensides phenomenon and blocky microstructure. The microscopic description of the Aridisols showed, the pedogenic formations of CaCO3 and gypsum, (i.e., orthic calcite nodules, void calcitans, and gypsum crystal chambers). The previous features are interpreted the occurrence of both calcic and gypsic horizons as described at the field. On the other hand the micromorphological examination of Entisols had no pedogenic feature that were enough to form any-diagnostic horizons confirming its undeveloped conditions. Therefore, it could be concluded from this study that soil micromorphology is one of the tools aid to Soil Taxonomy.
Key words: Micromorphology, Taxonomic units, Arid and semi arid soils.
