English : Monitoring of methyl bromide residues as bromide ion in some cereals and herbs collected from Egyptian governorates
Abstract A total of 145 cereal & pulse samples. 77 herbs and aromatic plants collected from 8 local markets in 5 EgyPtian Governorates were subjected to methyl bromide analysis as inorganic bromide. The result of bromide residues were compared to. Maximum Residue Limits (MRL's) established by Egyptian Organization Standardization. The mean contamination percentage was 76.6%. from which 24.8% exceeded the established MRLs. All collected herb samples were contaminated with bromide. but only 2.6% of analyzed samples exceeded the Maximum Residues Limits (MRL's). An additional 341 samples of medicinal and aromatic plants were collected from the main fumigating stations in 3 ports (Alexandria. Port Said. Cairo). The results of bromide residues were compared to the Codex Alimentarius MRL of bromide ion. It was observed that the contamination percentages ranged between 98-100 % with 0.58% violation only. This indicates good application practices of methyl bromide in fumigating stations. Key words: Methyl Bromide. Residue. Cereal and Pulse. Herbs. Medicinal and Aromatic Plants
