Arabic : دراسة اقتصادية لمحصول القطن في جمهورية مصر العربية
Abstract _______________________________________________________________________________________________ • M. Sc. in Agricultural Science (Agricultural Economics): Department of Agricultural Economics, Faculty of Agriculture, Tanta University, 2004. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ The thesis aimed to study the current situation of cotton production in Egypt in general and the Gharbia Governorate in particular, by studying the most important variables that are believed to have an impact on the productivity of the crop, as well as identifying the most important factors that led to farmers ’reluctance to cultivate this important crop. It was necessary to study and analyze the total and variable acre costs of the most important cotton varieties grown in the study sample in Gharbia Governorate, namely Giza 89, Giza 86, and also studying the impact of the economic reform policy on the economics of cotton production. The research was conducted on a stratified random sample of cotton growers in Gharbia Governorate, amounting to 200 holders, who were distributed among the two selected cotton types in the governorate. The results of the study showed that the feddan productivity of the cotton type 86 exceeded the cotton variety 89, as the feddan productivity of each of them reached about 8.82 quintals and 7.14 quintals, respectively. The results of the study indicated an increase in the net feddan yield of Giza 86 by about 839 pounds over the Giza 89 variety, which represents about 137% of the net feddan yield of Giza 89. The results of the study also indicated an increase in the feddan profitability of Giza 86 cultivar than that of Giza 89. The first is about 62%, while the second is about 29%. The study proved that the total elasticity of productivity of Giza 89 cotton reached about 0.986, and Giza 86 type cotton about 1.019. With regard to each of the land resource, the resource of automatic work, the resource of human labor and nitrogen fertilizer, the study showed that the value of its marginal product is higher than its alternative expense, meaning that its economic efficiency exceeds the correct one for each of the two types Giza 89 and Giza 86 with the sample of the study. Recommendations: In light of the results of the study, it recommends the following: 1- The necessity to expand the area cultivated with Giza 86. 2- Devising the strains with high productivity of the cotton crop. 3- The necessity to expand the use of economically efficient resources that exceed the right one, especially the land resource, mechanical work and nitrogen fertilizer. 4- Providing the necessary funding for cotton producers. 5- Restoring freshness in the price policy of the cotton crop and increasing the price of a quintal of cotton. _______________________________________________________________________________________________
