The rice crop is considered one of the main crops in Egypt. However, it has recently experienced some fluctuations in the area between the rise and fall, which was reflected in a cycle of fluctuation in the production and consumption of rice. Rice from abroad, as well as our rice exports by 30% during the study period.
The main objective of this study was studying the most important economic variables that affect consumption of rice crop, as well as studying the statistical estimate of the most important economic variables affecting the total national consumption, and the individual consumption function in the period 2000-2015.
The results indicated that most provinces of the Republic's rice cultivation Dakahlia, Kafr El Sheikh, Sharkia, Behera and Gharbia with a total area of 1.26 million feddan (91.8% from the average total area of rice).
The most important economic variables affecting total consumption are production, and self-sufficiency rate.
As for the estimation of the individual consumption function during the period (2000-2015) it was found that the most important variables affecting the individual consumption function are production, and self-sufficiency rate and ,the retail price of rice.
The price elasticity for rice was estimated at - 0.47, and the cross elasticity with wheat flower was 0.14
The rice domestic supply index increase by an annual rate 26.4 Thousand tons while export strength and export dependence decreased by an annual rate 0.008 and 0.007, Thousand tons respectively
Finally, research was recommended: cultivation of high quality varieties to be an alternative to imported items from abroad such as basmati rice , encouraging exports by increasing the cultivated area of rice and providing the necessary irrigation water for agriculture and encouraging its cultivation in new and reclaimed lands. activating the role of agricultural extension and cooperatives in guiding farmers in the proper use of water and rationalizing their use in the cultivation of rice crop
