English : An Economic Study on the Optimum Use of Agricultural Land Resources in Egypt in the Light of National and International Changes
Arabic : دراسة اقتصادية للاستخدام الأمثل للموارد الأرضية الزراعية في مصر في ضوء المتغيرات المحلية والدولية
Abstract ________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Egyptian Journal of Applied Sciences, Egyptian Society of Applied Sciences in Sharkia Governorate, Zagazig, Egypt, Volume (23), No. (6),ِ June 2008. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ The economic exploitation of agricultural resources is one of the main goals of agricultural policy to achieve sustainable agricultural development. On the other hand, the method of linear programming is one of the most important mathematical techniques designed to distribute economic resources among alternative uses so as to achieve the optimal use. Accordingly, the study aims at characterizing the cropping patterns that maximizes the net return per feddan, minimizes water requirements and maximizes the net return per water unit for the cropping pattern of the year 2006. To accomplish the study main goals, a linear programming models were applied as a tool for economic planning. However, the results of the study clarified that the optimum combination of crops produced according to the second scenario, which aimed at minimizing water requirements for the cropping pattern of the year 2006, represents the best results of linear programming models in general since this scenario achieves the greatest total net return estimated at L.E. 29,994 billion. Moreover, this senario achieves savings in total water requirements estimated at about 1.312%. On the other hand, this senario achieves the greatest net return per water unit, which amounts to about L.E. 0,921 per cubic metre, representing about 2.248% of that obtained by the cropping pattern of the year 2006. ________________________________________________________________________________________________
