English : A Total Diet Study of Pesticides and Contaminants in Cairo and Giza Governorates in 2001.
Abstract To monitor the exposure of Egyptian people to pesticide residues (80 compounds), PCP’s (14 congeners), heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb), nitrates and aflatoxines (B1, B2, G1, G2)contamination in food, the intake based on the total diet approach have been studied in the year 2001. The study depends on the food consumption data of the Global Environment Monitoring System / Food (GEMS/Food). Eighty two commodities were collected from 4 local markets in Cairo (2) and in Giza (2) Governorates. All food items were classified into 15 composite samples according to their source of contamination, dilution effect of food samples within groups and analytical methodologies suitable for each matrix. The composite samples groups were analyzed using different methods in replicates. The pattern of residues detected showed that 4 organophosphorous compounds were found, the estimated daily intakes (EDI) of chlorpyriphos-Me, malathion and diazinon were well below their corresponding Acceptable Daily Intakes (ADIs), however the profenphos is highly contaminated in spices group but the intake does not exceed their ADI. No organochlorine compounds and polychlorinated biphenyls were detected. The dietary of Cd and Pb were below their provisional tolerance weekly intake (PTWI), whereas diet was relatively highly contaminated with Cu but does not exceed their provisional maximum acceptable daily intake (PMADI). Vegetables, (root and tubers) and fruits were the most groups contaminated diet with nitrates. Aflatoxin B1 was detected only in nuts and cereals groups
