Existing and future agricultural extension system at south Tahreer province in Egypt

| Abstract |
The study aimed at investigation the existing and potential agricultural extension system in South Tahreer province as a promising area for high agricultural productivity with export abilities. The main objectives of the study were to identify: features of the existing agricultural extension system regarding the extension staff number, qualifications, tasks, and other agricultural information sources, recognize need to agricultural extension work, need to develop effective relationship with agricultural organizations, research organizations and other local organizations from the point of view of agricultural staff, recognize the agricultural staff opinion regarding important local problems and barriers hinder extension work, and to identify the interviewees proposals to enhance the extension work in the area.
Data were collected from a random sample of 156 respondents by personal interviews using a pre-tested questionnaire during April and May 2005. Means, standard deviation, variance coefficient were used to analyze data in addition to tables, frequencies and percentages.
The main results of the studs, revealed that:
- Lack of co-ordination between the agricultural organization, and both of research organization and other rural life stick-holder organizations.
- Need to Establishing additional agricultural organizations such as: Field Crop Research unit, Soil and Water, Agricultural Extension, and Plant Protection Units.
18 problems are found in the area e.g. Shortage in Agricultural Extension Equipments, and lack of well trained technical labours. 12 Barriers affect Extension work are found. the most important barriers are: no Agricultural Extension center there, lack of Agricultural extension publications, and insufficiency of extension information.
Six recommendations were developed in order to enhance Agricultural Extension service level in the area.
