Abstract |
This study was carried out at EL-Dakhlia Agricultural Experiments Direction, Agricultural Researches Center, in Mansoura city, Dakhlia Governorate, during 2003 season. In this study, garlic physical and mechanical properties were determined as relevant factors to design and operating the used machines for garlic production. At the duration of this study, Sidth-40 cloves of 61.90, 67.43 and 74.23% (w.b.) moisture content and Baladi cloves of 61.36, 66.00 and 72.41% (w.b.) moisture content were chosen to identify garlic clove properties.
The results of this study were summarized as follows:
1. The mean values of Sidth-40 clove physical and mechanical properties were: sphericity (0.43), roundness (0.19), weight (2.46 g), size (length (28.73 mm), width (14.47 mm) and thickness (13.13 mm)), surface area (253.60 mm2), bulk density (0.92 g/cm3), sliding friction coefficient (stainless steel surface (0.56), galvanized iron sheet surface (0.50) and plywood surface (0.40)), repose angle (44.15°) and hardness (18.23 N).
2. The mean values of Baladi clove physical and mechanical properties were: sphericity (0.62), roundness (0.40), weight (0.91 g), size (length (22.87 mm), width (14.13 mm) and thickness (9.00 mm)), surface area (186.27 mm2, bulk density (0.99 g/cm3), sliding friction coefficient (stainless steel surface (0.50), galvanized iron sheet surface (0.47) and plywood surface (0.33)), repose angle (42.65°) and hardness (17.13 N).
Finally, the previous results provide useful database for designers and operators of the used machines for garlic production.
