English : Evaluation of the used balers in the national expedition for recycling of the agricultural residues and rice straw baling
Arabic : تقييم المكابس المستخدمة فى الحملة القومية لتدوير المخلفات الزراعية وكبس قش الأرز
Abstract Rice crop is considered as an important cereal crop in Egypt. The total cultivated area was 1.25 million feddans approximately, which produced about 2.50 million tons straw (Ministry of agricultural, 2001). In despite of the economic importance of rice crop, it causes a serious environmental problem, which is straw burning after harvesting. So, the ministry of agriculture with a partnership of ministry of environment business disposed the national expedition for recycling the agriculture residues and baling rice straw in some governorates which widely plant and produce rice crop to overcome the environmental pollution and utilize rice straw usefully. A field survey was carried out during 2000 and 2001 seasons to evaluate the used balers in the expedition according to field capacity, field efficiency, energy requirements and baling costs. It was found that: 1- During 2000 season, the 126 available stationary balers were owned by farmers. The baler field capacity, field efficiency, energy requirements and baling costs were 0.8 ton/h, 56.34 %, 128.37 MJ/ton and 42.85 LE/ton (2.14 LE/bale) respectively. These balers were insufficient to bale the suggested straw amount 344959 tons. The relative lower field capacity of the stationary balers delayed straw baling after harvesting with about 33 days. 2- During 2001 season, there were 226 stationary and 116 mechanical balers which baled 330728 tons (more than the suggested amount with 7.68 %). The mechanical balers were evaluated at forward speeds of 2, 3.5 and 5 km/h. The results indicated that there was an increase in the mechanical baler field capacity and field efficiency, consequently, energy requirements and baling costs decreased with increasing the holding areas. When the forward speed increased from 2 to 5 km/h, there was an increase in the field capacity by 69.7 % and a decrease in field efficiency by 19.03 %. Operating mechanical baler from 3.5 to 5 km/h saved more energy and baling costs more than the stationary baler. The field survey showed that straw baling was accomplished after harvesting with about 25 days. It was because of operating 85 % of the used mechanical balers after starting the baling season with 45 days. Generally, it is clear that the balers specially the mechanical type were considered an effective method to overcome the environmental pollution, increase the agricultural production and utilize rice straw in many useful ways.
