Abstract This study was carried out at the Dept. of Agric. Eng. Faculty of Agric.Mansoura University to determine the required shear force for cutting some fruit tree branches as a relevant to the performance of pruning and chopping machinery. The shear tests were conducted using some fruit tree branches after pruning directly, after 10 days drying and after 20 days drying, using 4 knives of 15° bevel angle having 0, 10, 20 and 30° blade angles and using 3 knives of 0° blade angle having 15, 30 and 45° bevel angles. The obtained results indicated that it is possible to classify the tested branches according to the shear stress values into three categories as follows: 1. The first category of 1.00-4.00 MPa shear stress involved fig, grapes Thomposon seedless and grapes Red Roomy branches which achieved the mean shear stress values of 1.43, 3.82 and 4.00 MPa, respectively. 2. The second category of 4.00-6.00 MPa shear stress involved guava, apricots, pomegranate, mulberries, grapes King Ruby, olive and sour orange branches which achieved the mean shear stress values of 4.88, 4.99, 5.00, 5.58, 5.72, 5.81 and 5.92 MPa, respectively. 3. The third category of 6.00-10.00 MPa shear stress involved navel orange, volca mariana, mandarin and baldi lemon branches which achieved the mean shear stress values of 7.10, 7.72, 7.96 and 9.24 MPa, respectively. Finally, the results showed that the branch shear stress depended to great extent on the branch type. It was reversible proportional to the knife blade angle. While, it related positively to the knife bevel angle and the branch moisture content. These results provide a useful Database, which may help designers and operators of pruning, and chopping fruit tree branches machines to design more developed machines and to improve the performance of the existing machines.
