Abstract |
Four freshwater fish species (Oreochromis niloticus, Cyprinus carpio, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Clarius garpinus) were collected from River Nile, Abbassa Hatchery and Central Laboratory of Aquaculture Researches (CLAR), Abbassa.
All fishes were examined for infestation with nematodes (capillarids). Microscopic examination of squash preparation of sacrified fish organs (liver, kidney and spleen) and the alimentary canal showed that the prevalence of the infestation were (80%) in C. idella with intestinal capillariidae (adult C. yamagutii and larval stages of other capillaria species) and 25% in wild O. niloticus with embryonated eggs of Capillaria species in liver. Also seasonal incidence of Capillaria species infestation in C. idella was showed that the autumn recorded highest infestation rate (100%) and the summer record lowest infestation (56%) the histopathological changes of the posterior part of the intestine of C. idella infested with Capillaria species showed necrosis and focal desquamation in the intestinal epithelium.
Experimental infestation of O. niloticus and C. garpinus with third larval stage of Capillaria species showed no infection developed in the intestine of these fish species. Observation of C. idella naturally infested with larval stages of Capillaria species under laboratory condition for 6 months at 20- 23°C. Showed no any adult worm at the end of 6 months we suggested that this larval stage is infective stage for C. philippinensis and this fish act as intermediate host for capillariasis. The public health importance was discussed.
