English : Evaluation of farmers' performance to some new farm practices in Qalyobia governorate

Abstract The Objectives of the Study: The objectives of the study were to: I - Identify the level of respondent farmers' performance for each farm practice as follows: a) control and treatment of citrus gtiilli1iosis disease. b) bacterial inculcation of bean seeds with okadien, and c) treatment of onion seedlings with fungicides. 2. Determine the relationship between the overall degree of' the respondent farmers' performance for each of the selected practices and the independent variables under study. 3- Identify the constraints raring the respondents' performance and their suggestions to overcome 'them for each of 'the selected practices. Methodology: The study has been carried out in 'Iokh and Kalioub districts in Kalioubia Governorate. Three villages were selected, Carcashanda and Sanhra villages in Kalioub district to represent the practices of control and treatment of' citrus gummosis disease, and bacterial insulation of bean seeds with okadien. Sendyoun village in Kalioub district represents the practice of onion selected from each village whose performance steps for each selected practice are timely and directly monitored. A technical expert for each selected practice participated this monitoring in order to judge on the success of' respondents' performance steps. The data were collected through direct observation by using, a performance card that includes three performance categories: correct performance, wrong performance, and no performance, Each step in the selected practices is timely determined in minutes using a StopWatch. Prior to the field data collection, a pre-test was conducted with 12 respondents in some villages of Tokh and Kalioub districts. The field data collection was carried out during October 2002 for both of the control and treatment of citrus gummosis disease and the bacterial inculation of bean seeds okadien. But for the practice of onion seedling treatment with fungicides, data collection, was conducted during late November and the first week of. December. Chi Square was used to analyze data statistically. Frequencies and percentages also Were used to describe data. The Main Results of the Study: The performance level of the respondent citrus farmers was high in the following practices: painting the infected part with pordo past, inhabit the unslaked with water, and dissolve the unslaked link with water to get lime suspension with an average degree of about 89%,76%, and 69% respectively. The performance level for dissolving the grounded cubber sulphate in 5 liters of water, scraping the infected part together with a part of the surrounded healthy tissues, and dissolving the grounded cubher sulphate in the link; suspension with an average level degree about 57%, 57%, and 47% respectively. The performance level of the respondent bean farmers was high for the practices of spreading seeds on a clean plastic sheet with all average of 69%, while it was medium foe- keeping the treated seeds with okadien under the shade in addition to turning it over several tittles, adding okadien mixture wide an adhesive solution on the seeds, preparing the adhesive solution, and turning. the seeds with an average degrees ranged between 48% and 64%. The performance level of the respondent onion 'farmers was medium for the practices of' making a small bundle; of onion seedlings, spreading the onion seedling until they become dry, and adding 100 gm of ronelan material 50% in about 5 liters of water, submerse the onion seedling in the suspension, and steening the suspension. The level performance of these practices ranged from 35% to about 67%. while it was low for the practice of adding the adhesive (Arabic gum) with an average aim 33%. The study indicated that there were eight constraints hindering the performance of' respondent citrus farmers as follows: lack of knowledge about pordo paste preparation (63.33%). lack of knowledge about the c of correct procedure for scraping (46.67%), unavailability of some plant protection specialists (46.67%). irregular delivery of extension publications (36.67%). widespread of infected trees (30%) unavailability of cubber sulphate on time (27%). lack of' registered selling inputs outlets (23%) and the high level of around water (17%) . There were five constraints hindering the performance of respondent bean fanners as follows: uncertainty about the success of mixing been seeds with okadien (43%), Difficulty to get okadien material (30%). lacd of knowledge about lie correct practice procedures (27%), extension meetings were rarely held to clarify the importance of the practice (23%). and expiration of the validity of okadien (17%). There were eight constraints hindering the performance of respondent onion farmers as follows: high costs of fungicides (57%), unavailability of the recommended fungicides (53%), lack of registered selling inputs outlets (47%), lack of sufficient information about the most important fungicides used (40%), ineffectiveness of some fungicides due to its expiration (37%). uncertainty of .practice operation success (30%), and unavailability of masks to avoid fungicides side effects and its impact on health (20%).
