Abstract |
Field experiment was conducted at Tammia district, El-Fayoum Governorate to study the effect of irrigation frequencies and potassium levels on water consumptive use, water use efficiency (WUE) and wheat yield. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar (Sids 7) was planted during two successive winter growing seasons. Three irrigation intervals, i.e. 7, 14 and 21 days, also, two levels of K2O were added as potassium sulphate fertilizer i.e., 50 and 100 kg K2O/fed.
The obtained results showed that the increase in available soil moisture and potassium level was followed by increase in the seasonal actual evapotanspiration (ETo) and water use efficiency. In addition, the use of high level of potash fertilizer encouraged wheat plants to absorb more water and rose both of seasonal consumptive use and water use efficiency values. The greatest water use efficiency values were obtained by using 14 day irrigation duration cycle associated with the application of high level of potassium fertilizer (100 kg K2O/fed).
Water stress (prolonged irrigation frequency) negatively affected wheat biological yield, leaf area index and grain yield. Moreover, the yield and its parameters were decreased as a result of decreasing the levels of potassium fertilizer. The period of 14 days associated with 100 kg K2O/fed was the most appropriate treatment to save 50% of irrigation water and to increase the wheat grain yield by 34.3% under El-Fayoum Governorate conditions.
