Evaluation of the hygienic quality of ready to eat pigeons in Egypt.

Abstract |
One hundred and fifty random samples of ready to eat pigeons were collected under sterile condition from different food service establishments and restaurants; 50 each from Dakahlya and Kalyobia Governorates besides 50 from Cairo and Giza Governorates. The samples were examined for the presence of risk pathogens. The identified pathogens isolated from pigeon samples collected from Giza and Cairo governorates were E. coli (8%), S. aureus (20%), Enterococcus faecalis (8%) and C. jejuni (4%), while Salmonellae, Y. enterocolitica and C. perfringens could not be detected. Concerning Kalyobia Governorate the identified pathogens were S. aureus (24%), while E. coli, Enterococcus faecalis, C. perfringens and Y. enterocolilica were isolated at percentages 10, 16, 10 and 8%, respectively. Each of C. jejuni and Salmonellae failed detection. In Dakahlya Governorate the incidence percentage of each of E. coli and C. perfringens was 12%. Y. enterocolitica could be isolated from 8% of the examined samples, while C. jejuni and Salmoneilae were not recorded.
