English : A prospective study on the nature of mastitis-metritis-agalactia syndrome in cattle .
Arabic : دراسة على ظاهرة توقف ادرار اللبن فى الماشية الحلابة
Abstract During the last decade, veterinarians have become concerned about a post partum disease in cows characterized bypurulent vaginal discharge assumed to be due to metritis, and agalactia which is assumed to be due to mastitis. Mastitis-metritis agalactia syndrome M.M.A. in cows has becom increasingly complex and more prevalent in recent years. Clinical evaluation and history of 219 cows which had developed M.M.A. syndrome wer34e done each day just prior to parturition to past partum day-3. Results of studies during the acute phase of the disease revealed that the most prevalent type of clinical syndrome which refer to as agalactia is encountered at calving or during the first 2-3 days after parturition . Clinical signs associated with lactaional failure and uterine involvement were apparent in all agalactic cows involved; the udder was firm, hot and congested and teats were either flaccid or tense. When the udder was hand-milk, no milk or only a few drps could be squeezed from the teats. 77 cows showed puerperal werine secrtions while there were 147 cows with copious mucoid whie discharge-Rumen movement was absent and the intestinal contents were dry and scanty . For convenience of description cows with M.M.A. syndrome were grouped on basis of results of clinical examination into three groups including Agalactia with subclnical mastitis (16.89%), Agalactia with acute mastitis (38.11%) and Agalactia with acute generalced toxemia (3.2%). The present study on M.M.A. was conducted on 469 friesian cows in two farms in Alexandria. Mastitis Metritis Agalactia occutred in 219 cows with a mean prevalence rale of (46.69%). There was a significant positive correlation between the prevalence of M.M.A. and location period as a significant peak of M.M.A. cases was found for the first lactation period (37.89%).
