English : Studies on subclinical mastitis in a commercial dairy herd in western nubaria.

Abstract An evaluation of subclincal mastitis in Nubaria region, based on data from a big commercial dairy farm during a one and half year period (1987-1988) was carried out in order to estimate the frequency of subclinical mastitis and its bacteriologic causes. Data were processed from 690 frizian cows in different locations. An overall incidence of subclinical mastitis was 79.7% 26.23% for cows at three years old, 37.39% for cows 3-4 years old and 16.08% for cows over 4 years old. The larger number of infected quarters occurred during the third lactation (76.3%), followed by the first lactation (69.9%) and the least number was observed during the fourth lactation (48.0%). The response to subclinical mastitis in the herd showed also the presence of atrophied quarters which averaged 9.16%. Analysis of data showed 10.5% atrophied quarters during the first lactation, 8.8%, 3.7% and 21.3% during the second, third and fourth lactations respectively. Bacterial isolates from 13 75 quarter milk samples from 690 cows showed Staph. aureus 30.0%, Strept. agalactiae 16.4%, E. coli 31.3%, C.pyogenes 9.1% , P.aeruginosa 7.9% and K.pneumoniae 5.2%. The frequency of bacterial isolate in relation to lactation periods was studied. Staph. aureus mastitis was the highest (33.2%) during the first lactation, while Strept. Agalactiae accounted for the highest incidence (24.1%) with the fourth lactation. Coliform mastitis was very frequent (34.2% and 31.5%) during the second and third lactations respectively. The results obtained point out to an economic impact of subclinical mastitis in the farm, but no estimates are given in the present.
