Abstract |
Over a two year period (1999- 2000). Fecal swabs and materials of 299 apparently healthy and diarrheic lambs and kids, in flocks less than 3 months age, from different governorates in Egypt were collected. All samples were collected before any antibacterial treatment has been initiated and examined anaerobically for C. perfringens.
The percentage of recovery of C. perfringens types A and D from 74 diarrheic lambs were 21 .6% and 20.3%, respectively. While the percentage of isolation from 109 apparently healthy lambs were 5.5% and 2.8%, respectively. On other hand the percentage of C. perfringens types A and D from 48 diarrheic kids were 16.6% and 18.8%, respectively While those isolated from 68 apparently healthy kids were 4.4% and 2.9%, respectively. The isolated strains were tested against 10 antimicrobial drugs; all strains were susceptible to penicillin, amoxacillin, flumequine, ampiclox and chloramphenicol while they were resistant to cefepin and mupirocin. Some isolates acquired resistance against bacitracin
