English : Extension needs of farmers for Decreasing the loss of tomatoes production in some east delta governorates

Abstract The main objectives of this study were to : • Determine knowledge and implementation need level of the respondent farmers concerning the technical recommendation special for reducing the loss of tomatoes production. • Determine the effect of the ration between the knowledge and implementation level of the respondent farmers concerning the technical recommendations special for reducing the loss of tomatoes production and all independent variables that are studied . • Identify the most important sources of the agricultural information that farmers depend on to get their information about how to reduce the loss in tomatoes production. • Identify extension methods that farmers prefer to get extension messages concerning reducing the loss in tomatoes production. • Identify the extension services presented to tomatoes farmers by extension agriculture to help them to reduce the loss in tomatoes production. • Identify the causes that lead to increase the loss of tomatoes production from the farmers' point of view. Data were collected from random sample of 250 respondents from Sharkia, Ismalia and North Sinai governorates by personal interviews using pretested questionnaire during June 2003. Data were tabulated, processed and analyzed by using chi square, contingency coefficient, means standard Deviation, arithmetic mean, coefficient of variance, weighted arithmetic mean, in addition to frequencies, percentages. The results of this study revealed that : • About half of respondent, their knowledge need level of the technical recommendation concerning reducing the loss in tomatoes production was average and high, and that about 87.6 % of respondent their implementation need level of the technical recommendation mentioned above was average and high too. • There was a relation between the knowledge need level of the respondent farmers and their educational level, the degree of contact with change agent, the degree of frequency to the agricultural service centres, the degree of leadership behaviour, the degree of awareness of agricultural modem techniques, the number of the agricultural sources of information and the number of experience years in growing tomatoes and the degree of the exposure to mass media. • There was a relation between the implementation need level of the respondent fanners and their educational level, the degree of contact with change agent, the degree of frequency to the agricultural service centres, the participation in extension activities, the degree of awareness of agricultural modern techniques, the number of the agricultural information sources, the number of experience years in growing tomatoes and the degree of the perception to the loss of the tomatoes production and the precipitation of the problem the loss in tomatoes and the degree of exposing to mass media. • The most important sources of information that tomatoes farmers depend on were: the extension guide, agricultural T.V Programmes, friends and neighbours. • Concerning the extension methods that farmers prefer were : extension meetings, television and field visits. • Concerning the causes that leads to increase loss of tomatoes production were: increase the infection by the diseases and pests, the unavailable units of processing tomatoes in production areas and decrease of extension service in the stage of post harvest
