Abstract |
The study was conducted to: Assess and evaluate the mean dietary intakes of rural females at different ages (11-14, 15-24, 25-50 and over 50 years old),In addition to identifying variables, which might affect rural females' dietary intakes.
This community based study was done in a rural area of Benisuef governorate. Elshnawia village that was randomly selected. One hundred and fifty householdears were randomly chosen from the different socio-economic levels. These householdears included 342 females aging betweenll-14, 15-24, 25-50 and over 50years old, while the pregnant and lactating women were excluded Nutrient intakes were compared to the RDA's to evaluate the adequacy of each nutrient. Descriptive statistics (mean, SD) and range were used to demonstrate the dietary data as well as correlation coefficients were also estimated.
The most important findings included the following:
1. Regarding the mean nutrients Intakes of the rural females:
The results indicated that the daily intakes of protein, iron and vitamins for rural females in different age were satisfied. Calcium, phosphorus and calorie intakes were below the RDA's for all age groups.
2. Female's distribution according to their daily nutrient intakes expressed as percentage of RDA:
Most of the females agingll-14 years old got inadequate intakes of calcium and phosphorus while more than half of the sample received amounts below 75% of RDA of calorie, Around 30% had inadequate intakes of protein, iron, vit.A, vit.B1, niacin and vit. C.
Meanwhile, 94.6% and 84.8% of the females aging 15-24 years old had inadequate intakes of phosphorus and calcium. About one third of them received below 75% of the RDA of calorie, iron, and vitA, vit.B1, niacin and vitC.
The majority of females aging 25-50 years old got their intakes of kcal, protein, iron, vitamins (A, B1,B2,niacin and c) exceeded of the RDA. Meanwhile, the majority of them got inadequate intake of both calcium and phosphorus
Moreover, the majority of the females over 50 years old got inadequate intake of calcium and phosphorus. While, around one half of the sample had inadequate intakes of calorie, vit. A and vit. C.
3. Identifying variables that affect dietary intakes of the rural females:
Highly significant association was found between female education degree and dietary intakes of calories, protein, fat, iron, vit.B2 and niacin.
Highly negative correlations were noticed between number of inhabitant and females food intake of each of calories, protein, fat, carbohydrate, iron, and vitamins(B1, niacin & C).
The educational level of the family members was highly positively correlated with female's food intakes of each of calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, iron and niacin.
The size of land holding was highly positively correlated with female's food intakes of each of calories, protein, fat, iron, and vit B1.However, it was positively correlated with carbohydrates intake.
Household equipment owned was highly positive correlated with females food intakes of each of calories, protein, fat, iron, vitA, and VitC.
Information Sources was highly positively correlated with female's food intake of each of calories, protein, carbohydrate, iron, and calcium. Negative correlation was observed between source of information and female's intake of vitA.
Nutrition practices were highly positively correlated with female's food intakes of each of calories, protein, carbohydrate, iron and vit.B2
